Some of my history achieving Goals

When I was about eight years of age, I went from having the worst handwriting in school to becoming the best in the class. My father had taught me how to practise.

(This planted a seed for studying and using graphology later.)

I began to hypnotise teachers and kids at 12 years of age. Teachers would ask me to entertain the class during free periods.

(Seed planted for a stage hypnotist show later.)

I did memory demonstrations at school when I was around 14.

(Seed planted to be on stage later as a memory expert, demonstrating and teaching others.)

At 18 years of age I said I’d get an E-Type Jaguar one day, even though I was driving a 1953 FJ Holden. I was making plastic models of the E-Type at the time.

(Seed planted for getting a real E-Type Jaguar a few years later.)

I began officially studying handwriting analysis (graphology) at about 20 years of age, from the seed planted when I was eight.

I appeared on the Maggie Tabberer Show as a hypnotist and graphologist. She was Australia’s queen of television. I analysed her handwriting and her producers’.

(Seed planted for promoting a live, free "Stop Smoking" mass hypnosis session later.)

Over 1,000 smokers came to see me for this mass hypnosis session only a few weeks later. I was now performing as a full-time stage hypnotist.

(I made a goal that I would perform a feat called full-body catalepsy on myself using self-hypnosis.)

That goal was realised a few months later on television when I allowed an audience member to stand on my outstretched body between two chairs. I felt that was more effective than the old way of using a subject from the audience.

In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the United States to the ambitious goal of landing a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

On 20 July 1969 the Americans landed on the moon. That inspired me and many others that we could do anything if we set a goal.

In early 1969 I attended a week long training course and was actually taught the HOW to achieve Goals. I set a Goal to finally have that E-Type Jaguar.

My dream came true. It manifested in three months.

In 1969 I began conducting motivation seminars and business training with hypnosis.

(Seed planted for being a life coach later.)

The E-Type Jaguar manifested for me around 1970. In the early 1970s I attended an Alpha Rhythm Training course with 200 people.

(Seed planted to become the General Manager and Head Instructor.)

Within months I was chosen out of many applicants.

(I had always wanted to travel outside Australia.)

I was then given a first-class ticket on Qantas to travel and stay a month in San Francisco to do a special course and bring it back to Australia. I taught instructors, conducted many trainings, and coached high achievers.

(Seed planted to teach goal setting.)

I wanted to visit The Bahamas one day. A few years later I was invited there to work with the partner of Dr Maxwell Maltz, who wrote Psycho-Cybernetics, where I continued teaching and developing courses.

Around 1974, at about 29 years of age, I taught a week-long memory course at the University of Sydney after demonstrating to the President of the University of Sydney Union.

(From the seed planted 15 years earlier at 14.)

I realised another goal of appearing on television as a memory expert, demonstrating and teaching others.

(Seed planted for television production later.)

When I really put that out "into the universe", I met a business associate in North Sydney one day, by chance, who happened to own a recording studio. Together we produced a TV show called Home Affair, a real-estate programme on Channel 10 Sydney around 1977.

All the way through my history I coached and helped many more people with their own goals.

In 1980 I began designing programming and manufacturing the first portable, computerised coin operated touch-screen information kiosks for shopping centres.

These were exported to nine countries.

Building on the success of helping people over the years

In 1997 my hypnotherapy, personal development, life-coaching and counselling practice demanded more time.

In 2004 I moved the hypnotherapy practice from the Gold Coast to Sunnybank Hills in Brisbane.

Why do so many people fail to reach their goals?

The main problems people face in reaching their goals in life can vary from person to person. However, some common challenges include:

Lack of Personalised Approach: Life coaches often follow a one-size-fits-all method, failing to tailor strategies to the unique needs and circumstances of their clients. Each individual has different strengths, weaknesses, and motivations, so a personalised approach is crucial for success.

Insufficient Focus on Self-Discovery: Effective goal achievement requires a deep understanding of oneself. Many life coaches fail to prioritise self-discovery, which involves exploring values, beliefs, strengths, and passions. Without this self-awareness, clients may struggle to set meaningful goals aligned with their true desires.

Neglecting Accountability: Holding clients accountable is essential for progress. Some life coaches fail to establish a system of accountability, leading to clients losing motivation or falling back into old habits. Regular check-ins, progress tracking, and goal reviews are vital to keeping clients on track.

Limited Focus on Mindset and Limiting Beliefs: A significant aspect of goal attainment is addressing limiting beliefs and cultivating a growth mindset. Many life coaches focus only on action plans and tactics, neglecting the internal barriers that hinder progress. By not addressing mindset, coaches miss the opportunity to help clients overcome obstacles and build resilience.

Ignoring Holistic Well-Being: Goal achievement should not come at the expense of overall well-being. Life coaches who focus only on external achievements may overlook the importance of mental, emotional, and physical health. A well-rounded approach that considers all aspects of well-being is crucial for long-term success and happiness.

Lack of Clarity: Many individuals struggle with defining clear and specific goals. Without a clear vision, it becomes difficult to develop a plan and take the necessary steps towards achievement. Vague or ambiguous goals lead to confusion and loss of motivation.

Lack of Motivation: Maintaining motivation over time can be challenging. People often face obstacles, setbacks, and distractions that dampen enthusiasm and make it difficult to stay focused. Motivation plays a crucial role in goal attainment; without strong intrinsic or extrinsic drivers, individuals may struggle to persist through challenges.

Procrastination and Lack of Discipline: This common issue hinders progress when people struggle with time management and prioritisation, leading to delays in taking action. Distractions and poor self-discipline can derail progress. Without effective self-regulation, individuals may struggle to prioritise tasks and consistently work towards their goals.

Fear of Failure or Success: Fear can paralyse individuals and prevent them from taking risks or committing fully. Fear of failure discourages risk-taking and stepping outside comfort zones, while fear of success can create self-doubt and anxiety about responsibilities and change. Overcoming these fears and developing a growth mindset is crucial.

Lack of Support: Having a strong support system plays a significant role in achievement. Without encouragement and accountability, individuals may struggle to stay motivated or overcome obstacles. Support systems and accountability partners greatly enhance the likelihood of success.

Unrealistic Expectations: Setting unrealistic goals or expecting instant results leads to frustration. It is important to set realistic, achievable goals that align with one’s capabilities and resources. Overly ambitious goals can set people up for failure, discouragement, and loss of motivation.

Poor Planning and Organisation: Achievement requires careful planning and strategising. Without a clear plan and actionable steps, people may feel overwhelmed or lose focus. Effective organisation helps prioritise tasks, allocate resources, and track progress; without it, procrastination and inefficiency take over.

Lack of Commitment: Achieving goals requires dedication, persistence, and consistency. Without full commitment, individuals may struggle to make sacrifices and sustain the effort required for success.

External Obstacles: Sometimes, external factors beyond an individual’s control impede achievement. Financial limitations, health issues, personal crises, lack of resources, or societal barriers can derail progress. Overcoming these obstacles requires resilience, problem-solving skills, and adaptability.

Lack of Self-Belief and Confidence: Believing in oneself is essential. If individuals doubt their abilities or have low self-esteem, they undermine their efforts and limit potential for success.

Lack of Adaptability: Some individuals become too rigid in pursuing a specific goal, resisting adjustments when faced with setbacks or change. Being adaptable and flexible is often crucial for overcoming obstacles and finding new paths to success.

Lack of Skills or Knowledge: At times, people lack the necessary skills or knowledge to accomplish goals. In such cases, seeking additional education, training, or guidance bridges the gap and provides the competencies required.

Lack of Accountability and Support: Without systems of accountability and encouragement, it is difficult to stay on track. Guidance, feedback, and encouragement significantly improve goal success rates.

Negative Self-Talk and Limiting Beliefs: Negative self-talk, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs undermine confidence and achievement. Reframing negative thought patterns builds self-efficacy and supports a positive mindset.

Lack of Persistence and Resilience: Goal attainment requires perseverance through setbacks. Individuals who give up easily or lack resilience to recover from failures struggle to make meaningful progress.
